Birthday Girl Turns 7+1

March 4, 2010 · 2 Comments

Kida was expecting cupcakes and Hi-C’s but had no idea that a pinata would also make its way to her class for her birthday celebration.  The teacher got the rowdy and curious 2nd graders lined up to go outside and while she kept them seated and quiet, I hung the pinata.  Kida got the first 10 seconds to smack the pinata.  It rarely damaged.  After she finished, a boy classmate who was about my height (I’m short and not proud of it) hit it about three times before it went down.  There was a small break in the pinata but it fell because the plastic thingy where the rope loops through broke.  The teacher ended up having Kida and three classmates she picked help pass out the candy so that everyone gets an even amount.

I learned today that 2nd graders are nothing like cute 1st graders (gosh, I miss those times).  Second graders can take me and their teacher down if they really wanted to.  They scare me but I like them.  They are very, VERY curious.  The instant I stepped into their classroom, they started to pay attention to me and started asking me questions about the food and pinata.  I told them nicely and quietly to pay attention to their teacher who was trying her best to get their attention without going nuts.  Of course, they didn’t listen and continued asking me questions right and left.  It was almost comical how a few of them came up to me and said, “I’ll help you hold that”, then grabbing the Hi-C’s, the cupcakes, the pinata and the pinata stick from my grip even before I was able to say anything.  I was standing there with my jaw open, with not words, but the sound, “Uhhh…” coming out of my mouth and a dumbfounded, “Sure” seconds after. I don’t know how the teacher does it:  spending 5 hours a day, Monday through Friday with these kids.  I would go nuts!  They really should pay teachers what they are worth: gold.

I was watching a Vimeo video today from Fifty People, One Question with the title: “Where Do You Want to Wake Up Tomorrow?” where 50 people were asked where they would want wake up the next day.  If I was asked that question, my answer would be, the day I gave birth to Kida.  It was such a beautiful and spiritual moment that I would definitely want to experience it again.  It is an amazing and miraculous thing to be able to give life to a living person who will one day grow up to live her own wonderful life.  It is beyond anything imaginable.

Anyway, I am very happy that Kida had a wonderful time.  I can’t believe she is now 8.

It’s About Me Me Me!

January 2, 2010 · 2 Comments

Yep! That’s right.  I’ve finally updated my “about me” page.  I will continue to tweak it as I go.  Right now I am still trying to adjust to the new year. Still can’t believe the 00’s are over!

I’ve been spending lots of time playing on iMovie and came up with this:

It’s also under “about me”.

You have no idea how many self-taken photos I have of myself.  It’s crazy.  Husband thought I was wasting space but last night while I was putting the finishing touches on the video, I showed it to him and he thought it was the most craziest, cooliest, funniest idea.  He loved it!  LOL!!!!!  Who’s wasting space now! J/K.

School Music Concert

December 11, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Kida had her first music concert yesterday evening.  She joined the Soaring Singers at her school earlier this year and has been practicing every Monday after school.  The Soaring Singers actually had their first concert at a Barns & Noble’s but Kida was sick so she missed it.  I’m so glad that she made it to this one.  She really enjoyed it.  Here are a couple of photos from the concert.  Kida is the one with the pink heart.  *Click the photos to see a larger view*

5th and 6th grade orchestra.  There was also a 7th and 8th grade orchestra.

Here is the Soaring Singers singing “Christmas Don’t Be Late”.  This is Kida’s favorite song.

Hmong New Year Festival in Colorado

November 29, 2009 · 2 Comments

The Hmong new  year festival ended today.  This year, I was surprised that there wasn’t a lot of people.  The parking lot didn’t quite fill up like the previous years.  The food and vendor booths were limited.  There were about 5 food booths and maybe 6 or 7 vendor booths.  The entertainment stage was lacking and there wasn’t really a cheery audience to say the least.  Some people lingered but maybe just in hopes that something exciting might happen.  Nothing exciting happened.  I wonder if the economy had anything to do with this.  The people seemed sluggish and seemed to have attended only because they had nothing better to do.

Josh and I took the camera and were able to get some colorful shots.  Hopefully next year will be a little more exciting.  Click on the thumbnails to see larger photo.

Last but not least, a video of one of the dances. Enjoy!!!!

Watching A Dance

Two Hmong dancers watching a dance.

One dance of many.  To view another dance, go to my youtube.

November 30th was the last day of the Hmong New Year festival in Colorado.  Husband and I and the girls went all 3 days for the food and to watch some of the entertainment.  I met some friends and ate my favorite food: papaya salad, laab, fried fish, Hmong sausage, and purple sticky rice. I would have to say, the best part was seeing all the Hmong people together enjoying a festive weekend and being a part of it.

August Brief And A Few Exciting Things

September 10, 2008 · 2 Comments

It has been awhile but so much has happened just within the month! I won’t go into details but here’s a short brief:

:: Kida started first grade on August 5th. It’s been hard for me to deal with the changes and how much she’s grown. We are getting up at 6am three times a week to make it in time for breakfast at Kida’s school. Two nights a week, Kida spends the night at the babysitter to take the morning bus to school. This works out great because on those two nights, I work at 11am so it would make no sense for me to drop Kida off at school, drive all the way home for a couple of hours then drop off Kylie at the sitter, then head to work. That would be a whole lot of driving and gas money!
:: Kylie is 18 months now. She is definitely a grown up in a baby’s body! There is so much to say about all the things she’s learning but heck, we all know that all babies do the same things! I’d like to share a fun little clip of her though…enjoy!

:: Husband is in his 3rd rotation. He has 4 left. He will graduate from Pharmacy school in less than 9 months! I remember that night when we found out he got in. We had returned home from somewhere and grabbed the mail. We were in the parking lot with barely enough light when he opened the letter size manila envelope and read it. A couple of seconds later, he jumped into the air and yelled, “YESSS!!” and other things. I yelled with him. That was about 4 years ago.
:: Watched “Big Fish” borrowed from my sister. It was a beautifully produced movie that made me think about how my husband (over 7 years ago when we met) found me on the college campus we both attended when we returned from the conference in Chicago. In Chicago, I told him he wouldn’t find me because our campus was pretty big but he found me.

Last weekend, my sister had a garage sale that went well. A lot of junk was sold and I even sold a few pieces of jewelry! That evening, my sister wanted to make trout but had no idea how. We’ve seen Mom bake trout stuffed with herbs so I figured we can give it a try. Low and behold, it turned out perfectly delicious! I’ll definitely make this again.

Gutted and uncooked store bought trout.

Stuffing: olive oil, chopped cilantro, mint, chives, dill, scallions, garlic, a dash of salt and black pepper, and a pinch of dried Thai peppers.

Baked in the oven at 400 degrees F for 25 minutes.

Here’s my plate with a side of boiled green beans and rice.

The day after, I got up early to prep a pot roast in my slow cooker to take over to my brother’s birthday gathering. I found a simple recipe online and cooked the meat for 8 hours then shredded. Ohhh, it was heavenly da-lish! Husband ate a ton!

Here’s Great Grandma C, Kylie and myself:

Kida and her eye make up using lipstick. We watched a youtube video of a girl using lipstick as a primer for her eyeshadows and since then, Kida’s been wearing her lipsticks on her lid.

Last but not least, I read “The Notebook” by Nicholas Sparks. I heard the book was better than the movie so I decided to read the book before watching the movie just so that the movie doesn’t ruin it for me. The book is way better than the movie. I cried quite a few times reading the book and it also made me think about my husband and I and when we hit old age.

Jonas Brothers Concert Last Weekend

July 26, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Last week, I took Kida to the Jonas Brothers concert. The concert started at 7pm so I figured we’d go early to avoid traffic and hang out in my office until it got closer to the time. We get there and the streets are already blocked with cones. There was a line of teeny-boppers and some with their parents from the VIP door down to the end of the street. We turn into the parking garage (where I normally park when I go to work) and there is a sign that says “$20 Parking”. I rolled down my window and told the man that I work in the building next to the parking garage. He asked for my parking pass. I showed him and he let me in free. Whew! I only had $20 with me that day and was planning on buying Kida some memorabilia with it.

So we park and went inside the office. I was able to get a few things caught up in time to head over to the concert. I figured everyone must be inside already since it was about a quarter till. We crossed the street and to my surprise, there was a line. This was just the regular entrance but it was packed. It took about 20 minutes in this line, which was more like a mesh of people, before we got in. Once inside, we still had to flow with the slow moving crowd. We found a flat spot near the second half of the lawn seats and sat our butts down. Little did we know that when everyone stood up, we weren’t able to see anything! It didn’t help that I am about the height of a 12 year old and the teens standing next to us were about 14 or 15. Kida found a spot further down where it was sloped more so we headed down. It worked.

The amphitheatre was packed. It’s unbelievable how popular the Jonas Brother’s are. Disney knows exactly what they are doing. They are pocketing money from parents through their kids. And, I am one of those parents!!!

Demi Lovato opened up for the Jonas Brother’s. She has such a nice and strong voice. She kind of sounds like Michelle Branch. After Demi sang, she left and we waited for half an hour before the Jonas Brother’s came out. Once they came out though, man, my eardrums nearly blew out. There was a girl behind Kida and I who had the highest pitched scream ever. We didn’t think they would sing “This Is Me”, one of the big songs from Camp Rock where Demi and Joe Jonas sing together, but they surprised us! Kida started to cry LOUD but no one heard (but me of course) because I was holding her on my poor hips! I asked her what was wrong but she was crying so hard that she couldn’t talk. I asked, “Are you hurt?”, nothing. “Are you sad?”, nothing. “Do you want to leave?” she nods yes. We make our way out of the crowd, up the stairs where it was a little more quiet and I ask her, “What happened Kida?”. She said, “It was too sad and happy that it made me cry. If we didn’t leave, I would still be crying”. Then later she said, “I wanted to cry louder but I thought all the people would hear me.”

We didn’t stay until the end for two reasons: 1) Kida would continue crying and possibly even louder and 2) Traffic would be crazy. Kida was very happy though. She still can’t believe she saw her favorites idols: Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato LIVE.

Here’s what I was able to capture of “This Is Me”. Right when Demi Lovato came out for this song, I had run out of space on my camera!

Here is Kida’s rendition:

The 4th And Earlier

July 5, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Yesterday, the family headed over to my parents’ house for a bbq. It wasn’t what I had hoped for but overall, the food was great as always. I try not to stress over life’s ups and downs and just really focus on the happy things. It makes it difficult when the people I love don’t open up or are afraid to express whatever that is on their minds but what can I do. As Franklin Covey says (not exact phrases), you can’t change the things around you, but you can change how you react or deal with things. Anyway, we left there around 5-ish and planned on watching the Green Valley Ranch fireworks from the front porch of our condo but ended up driving 5 minutes to be closer to the fireworks.

Here, Kida looking pretty before heading to parent’s. Kylie on my back watching me put on make-up. Kylie, at the Green Valley Ranch park, pretending she’s wearing my earrings. Amazing fireworks to end the night.
July 4th

Here are a few things that I wasn’t able to post since the last couple of weeks. Work has been extremely stressful as well as home life. I took a couple of days last week off because the babysitter needed to take a vacation and was hoping to get a few things done but never got to any of it. I’ll try to write a few things at cafemom.com.

Hiking in Boulder up near Flagstaff; view from the hiking trail; Kida with her hair curled; Kylie playing with curlers.

Soccer and volleyball tournament. I didn’t really spend time watching any games (I never really) but I did watch some Hmong dances and bought Kida and Kylie each a Hmong outfit. I met some friends and had some papaya, Hmong sausage, sticky rice, and nava.

Went to the Denver Botanic Gardens and saw lots of bees! They were busy pollinating so they didn’t come after me this time. Here are a few photos. The rest, I’ve put into a video on youtube. View it below.

After visiting the Botanic Gardens, I was inspired to pot the baby spiders from the mother spider plant. I gave half to my co-workers and left the rest at my parents house. I gave grandma Chang a plant and she told me that if I eat leaves, I’ll have a girl and if I eat the root, I’ll have a boy so I should eat the root. I told her, I’m done having kids…and that this plant is not edible. She thinks it is edible…I hope she doesn’t eat it! I was also inspired to plant my one pot in the front entrance of our condo. I think the pot has sat out there for 2 years empty. So, I guess it was a good thing that I went to the Botanic Gardens!

Old Vacation Movie and My Girls

February 11, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Since I’ve learned how to use iMovie on my macbook, I have been spending time putting a few together. I am still pretty new to iMovie but once I get the hang of it, I’d like to do more creative things such as fading music and combining video and still photos.

Here is what I was working on the last couple of weeks. I finally got it done.

* * *
Now, this movie here is pretty long. It is over 8 minutes but it is photos of my two girls in one year. This movie was actually completed a few weeks ago but I just forgot to share it here.
